KC DiversAbility College & Career Fair

The KC DiversAbility College & Career Fair connects high school students with unique learning needs to real opportunities across the Kansas City metro. At this one-of-a-kind event, students can meet with college and job training programs, build their resumes, practice job interviews, explore summer internships, and connect with adult service providers. They can even take the first step in applying for state and local support services all in one place.

What can I expect at the fair?

Think of this as your "one-stop shop" for life after high school. We host dozens of vendors in one room, including:

  • Inclusive Employers: Companies looking to hire diverse talent and conduct on-the-spot introductions.
  • Colleges & Trade Schools: Recruiters from programs specifically designed to support students with unique learning needs.
  • State & Local Agencies: Experts who can help you navigate Medicaid, Vocational Rehabilitation, and other essential support services.

Our goal is to help you "demystify the maze" of transition services. You’ll leave with connections, potential interviews, and a clearer path forward.

How do I Prepare for the Fair?

Whether you are looking for a job, a college, or just starting to explore your options, a little preparation goes a long way. Use this checklist to make the most of your day!

  1. What to Bring
  • Resumes: Bring at least 10 copies. Even if you don’t have work experience, include volunteer roles, school projects, or clubs.
  • A "Cheat Sheet": Jot down a few notes about the specific companies or colleges you definitely want to visit so you don’t forget. (We will release the vendor list about a week before the fair.)
  • A Notebook and Pen: You’ll be meeting people, so get their names. Write down any advice you want to remember.
  1. Dress for Success. Aim for Business Casual.
  • Think: A nice pair of khakis or slacks, a clean polo or button-down shirt, or a simple dress/skirt.
  • Pro-Tip: Wear comfortable shoes! You’ll be doing a lot of walking and standing.
  1. Practice Your "Elevator Pitch"

When you walk up to a table, have a 30-second introduction ready. It can be as simple as:

"Hi, my name is [Name]. I’m a student at [School] and I’m interested in [Type of work/college major]. Can you tell me more about what your organization does?"

  1. Questions to Ask

Not sure what to say? Try these:

  • For Employers: "What skills are you looking for in a new hire?" or "Do you offer any on-the-job training?"
  • For Colleges: "What kind of support services do you have for students with learning differences?"
  • For State Agencies: "How do I sign up for services once I graduate high school?"
How can I sign up multiple students from my school class at once?

Yes, you can sign up multiple students at once. Please contact us at admin@thetransitionacademy.org
